Early inspection of the property may influence your design or your remodeling process. You should inspect for the following before you start designing your remodeled area or your new addition:
- Mold, mildew, fungus
- Radon
- Asbestos
- Leaks
- Lead paint
If your inspection for any of these materials or agents is positive, you will need to take special steps to prepare the area for remodeling or for your addition. If radon gas is detected, you will need to do additional sealing of basement walls and floors and slab foundations. Finding mold, mildew or fungus will require special steps to remove it, and installation of vapor and moisture barriers. Removing asbestos will be essential for your family's respiratory health, and your will need to plan for careful removal. Lead paint will also need to be removed through special processes and some of the wood may need to be replaced.
