Tip #191: Use steel studs for non-bearing walls instead of wood

The primary reasons for using wood in house framing is in the properties of wood. Wood has characteristics metals do not, such as:

  • Insulation and heat/cold transfer
  • Strength and flexibility
  • Load transfer

In non-bearing walls, the flexibility, load transfer and insulation characteristics are not as important. Using steel studs for non-bearing walls can save money on your house addition or remodeling project. Steel studs provide several benefits as well. They have existing holes for routing of electrical wiring. Standard wood studs require drilling of these holes. Steel studs are better than wood for framing non-bearing surfaces that aren't plumb - like the interior of a skylight which is frequently at an angle between the ceiling and the skylight glass. Steel studs are perfect for this application since they bend easily with a relief cut compared and are easy to attach to other surfaces compared to a wood stud.
