Tip #12: Properly seal ducts in unconditioned spaces

You can save money over the long term by improving energy-efficiency by properly sealing any heat/air ducts in unconditioned spaces or rooms in your home. For example, if you don't use your basement or part of your basement, seal off the unused portions of the space and properly seal the ducts. This will prevent the escape of expensively conditioned air through the ducts into the unconditioned area. The savings you will achieve may be very surprising. Sealing ducts is quite simple. Purchase plastic sheeting and cut pieces to fit the face of your ducts. Then simply seal the plastic sheets over the face of the ducts with good tape. In minutes, the ducts will be effectively sealed and prevent the escape of conditioned air.
