Tip #116: Don't use soffits above cabinets or bookcases

When remodeling a kitchen or other area with wall-mounted cabinets, you can save a good amount by not using soffits above the cabinets. This decision will save you money on materials and labor and allow you to use the top of the cabinets as a shelf or to continue the cabinets all the way to the ceiling. This principle applies to the installation of bookcases, as well. Either use the top of the bookcase for decorative items or additional books by extending to the ceiling. Shelves atop cabinets or bookcases provide a very practical way to add color or texture to your room. Omitting the soffits saves money, provides additional space and still leaves you room to grow in the future.
