If your project includes any changes to your landscaping or to the exterior of your home, check with your homeowner's association early in the planning and design stage of your work. Many communities have rules and covenants regarding exterior changes to homes. Some have restrictions about changing rooflines, about landscaping, about architectural styles, and the like. Some even have restrictions on mailbox color. Before your design and your planning go too far, be sure to check with the association about restrictions and about policies that may require that you get permission to make certain changes. Being forced to re-do a remodel or addition will become very expensive.
